Abel Gonzalez provides quality affordable housing for seniors in a renovated industrial building donated to MHDC by Pacific Bell. The adaptive use of this building provides another example of MHDC combining scarce public dollars with valuable private resources to create new housing units in the Mission District. The building had previously been a telephone switching station, but was vacant for several years prior to the transfer of ownership to MHDC. The Abel Gonzalez project was the recipient of a 1994 National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) award for Economic Revitalization.
