Mission Housing Development Corporations Mourns the Loss of One of Its Board Members.
Luisa Ezquerro: A native of San Francisco on May 1, 2010 lost her long battle to cancer at home with family.
Luisa, a lifelong educator and community activist, leader and mentor spent her life serving her San Francisco community. She taught for 43 years in San Francisco’s Unified Public Schools impacting the lives of countless young adults throughout the City she loved dearly. Luisa started her student teaching at Poly Tech High School, taught at Lincoln High School, Lowell High School, and retired while teaching at McAteer High School. Those that knew Luisa, know that she never retired but kept active helping other in the community.
Luisa was a community activist for most of her adult life helping to found the Mission Coalition Organization and serving on its board of directors. She helped create other community organizations which continue to enrich the lives of so many today including the Mission Housing Development Corporation where she was a member of their Executive Board, Mission Model Neighborhood Corporation, Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, Mission Economic Development Association, The Mission Reading Clinic now known as the Mission Learning Center, The Mission Tutorial Program, Arriba Juntos, Mission Neighborhood Health Center, Mission Community Legal Defense and Mission Hiring Hall.
Luisa was very active in the Teachers Union, and a member of their Executive Board, where she served as president for approximately six years. In 2001, she was awarded Teacher of the Year by San Francisco State University.
Luisa was appointed to the Recreation and Parks Commission by Mayor George Moscone in 1976. In 2004, she was appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom to the Commission on the Status of Women. Throughout the span of her life she was appointed to and served on the transition teams for three San Francisco Mayors.
In addition, Luisa was active with the United Educators of San Francisco, Jamestown Community Center, San Francisco Planning and Urban Research (SPUR) and was a consultant for the San Francisco Board of Education.
Luisa is survived by her brother Manuel Ezquerro, her sister Carmen Ezquerro Fletcher, and her many beloved nephews and nieces.
Viewing will be at Duggan’s Funeral Home at 3434 17th Street, San Francisco, Thursday, May 6 from 3pm to 6:30, followed by the rosary at Saint Anne’s Church of the Sunset at 850 Judah between 14th Avenue and Funston at 7pm. Funeral services will be the following day, Friday, May 7th at St. Anne’s Church 10am and the burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

2010 My Free Taxes Van Tour
On February 18, 2010 Valencia Gardens was fortunate to participate in the 2010 San Francisco Tax Van Tour hosted by
myfreetaxes.com. The event provided free tax filing assistance for Valencia Gardens' Residents. Some residents were a bit ambivillant about their tax filing. I was nervous at the beginning but am leaving very happy." Peaches, Valencia Gardens Resident said. Joan, also a resident from Valencia Gardens said "Being my first time doing my taxes it was a lot less stressful than I thought."
The tax van successfully instructed fifty residents on how to file, and twenty of those participants were able to file their 2009 taxes.

In an effort to gain greater community support of the 61-unit Bastian Court Development, MHDC and Bastian Partners co-sponsored a Meet and Greet in Downtown Fresno, CA on Saturday, February 13, 2010.

Apartment Developers to hold meet and greet
One Mission Peace Rally

The Mission was plagued by violence on the weekend of Halloween. The One Mission project sought to unite the community in a procession from 16th and Mission to 24th and Harrison. The Aztec dancers recited a prayer of peace before all participants in hopes of continued their march. Mission Housing Development Corporation also took part in this march of solidarity, and has done so in order to show support of our community through the thick and thin.

MHDC brings free internet to residents!
As the pilot of Mayor Gavin Newsom's TechConnect initiative, MHDC has worked with the Department of Telecommunications and Information Systems, to connect three buildings with free internet.
Valencia Gardens, a 260 unit mixed housing development, is now the first building in the country with free access to the internet via municipal fiber. Residents can now access the internet in their homes as well as in the computer lab. The computer lab is home to classes by leading technology non-profits, Caminos Pathways and One Economy.
The Altamont Hotel and Dunleavy Plaza, an 88 unit SRO and a 49 unit family building respectively, also have free internet access. Meraki, a Bay Area wireless company, has installed their "Free the Net" hardware to provide free wireless access to residents and the surrounding community.
Internet and Technology
MHDC is proud to announce the newly graduated class of Digital Connectors. On Friday August, 8th twelve high school aged youth from the Mission and Visitation Valley completed 10 weeks of training in Valencia Gardens computer lab, led by One Economy’s, Leo Sosa. One Economy’s Digital Connectors program identifies talented young people, immerses them in technology training, and helps them build their leadership and workplace skills to enter the 21st century economy. The young graduates of this incredibly successful program are motivated to give back to their community and will contribute in a number of ways, including community projects in digital literacy, creating technology resources and providing technology support. Congratulations to the graduates! Mission Housing welcomes the next wave of digital technology leaders!
School Backpacks!
For the first time ever, MHDC has been able to distribute backpacks to every resident between the ages of 6-11 in our buildings! Thanks to a generous donation from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, all the young children of Mission Housing’s residences are starting this school year with the confidence and support they need to have a successful educational experience.
