At Mission Housing Development Corporation, our commitment to strengthening communities and building equity through affordable housing remains unwavering. As we reflect on the past year and look toward the future, we are excited to share significant progress on transformative developments that will provide critical housing opportunities for San Francisco residents.
1979 Mission Street: Expanding Affordable Housing Opportunities
1979 Mission Street is currently in the design development phase. This development will feature three distinct buildings: two designed for families and one dedicated to Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) for formerly homeless individuals. Altogether, these buildings will provide over 350 units of permanently affordable housing, addressing the city’s urgent need for safe, stable, and affordable homes.
If everything proceeds as planned, we anticipate breaking ground on the PSH building in mid-December 2025, marking an important step forward in our mission to create equitable housing solutions for San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents. 250 Laguna Honda: Affordable Housing in San Francisco's West Side
250 Laguna Honda is a new 100% affordable housing community coming to San Francisco’s west side in the Forest Hill neighborhood. This eight-story, 172-unit development will serve low- and moderate-income households, with all units targeted to families earning less than 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), with 25% of units reserved for families exiting homelessness.
The building will offer one, two, and three-bedroom apartments and amenities that promote community and well-being. Residents will also benefit from on-site staff support and convenient access to the Forest Hill MUNI Metro station, nearby parks, schools, and local services. Mission Inn: Nearing Completion
The Mission Inn project is now 75% complete, marking major milestones in framing, roofing, windows, fire suppression, and exterior cladding. With structural work well underway, our team is now focused on interior construction, including drywall, painting, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) installations. Final touches, such as flooring and cabinetry, are also in progress, ensuring that this development will soon become a welcoming home for its future residents.
Site work is advancing steadily, with flatwork, grading, storm drains, and ADA-compliant ramps completed. Exterior painting is also ongoing, adding the final aesthetic touches to this vital project. Barring any weather-related delays, Mission Inn is on track for completion by mid-March 2025, bringing us one step closer to providing much-needed affordable housing in San Francisco.
3485 Cesar Chavez St.: Moving Toward Construction
MHDC is serving as the development consultant for the 3485 Cesar Chavez project, which is owned by Sequoia Living. Sequoia Living is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving low-income seniors in the San Francisco Bay Area by providing affordable housing, supportive services, and continuing care communities. Sequoia Living will own and operate the project.
A major milestone was recently achieved at 3485 Cesar Chavez with successfully completing the Design Development (DD) phase. The proposed development is a seven-story structure (five stories of Type IIIA construction over two levels of Type IA construction), comprising 126 100% affordable rental units—66 studios and 60 one-bedroom apartments. The building will also include program offices, common areas, and community space for residents. David Baker Architects is the project architect.
The site is located at 3485 Cesar Chavez Street at the intersection with Valencia Street in the Mission Bernal Neighborhood Commercial District. The project is being processed under SB 35 and aims to address the growing housing needs of seniors in San Francisco.
All these developments are more than just construction projects—they are the foundation for thriving, inclusive communities. Thanks to the unwavering support of our donors, partners, and advocates, Mission Housing continues to make strides in providing high-quality, service-rich affordable housing for those who need it most.
Stay tuned for more updates as we bring these developments to life and continue building a stronger future for all.
