Mission Housing Celebrates $50K Grant and Launches Renovation of Historic Apollo Hotel with Wells Fargo

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Mission Housing Development Corporation announced Tuesday the start of a major renovation and beautification project at the historic Apollo Hotel, an 80-unit affordable housing property in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District. The revitalization effort, made possible by a $50,000 grant from Wells Fargo’s Welcome Home program, significantly upgraded the hotel’s shared spaces and improved the living environment for almost a hundred high-need residents.
To mark the occasion, Mission Housing hosted a community celebration and workday at the Apollo Hotel on Tuesday, October 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event featured a short presentation with speakers from Mission Housing and Wells Fargo’s executive and philanthropic teams marking this momentous day for the over 100-year-old building.
“The Apollo was one of the very first buildings that is now known as 'Permanent Supportive Housing' in the history of San Francisco affordable housing. This will continue to be more than just a roof over someone's head,” said Sam Moss, Executive Director of Mission Housing. “With this generous grant from Wells Fargo, we’re ensuring that the Apollo continues to be an affordable place of comfort, community, and support.”
“Though it’s beautiful to talk about new homes with ribbon cuttings – this existing space is filled with rooms people call home. Those coming here to our SROs have been homeless for quite some time," said Marcia Contreras, Deputy Executive Director of Mission Housing. “These are community members who are looking for services and opportunities to create their homes and futures, and Mission Housing thanks Wells Fargo for their investment in the Apollo Hotel and for all of the volunteers that came out today to help beautify the spaces so our residents have unique spaces to create community."
