Mission Housing Launches Senior Walking Club in the Mission District

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – With over a dozen in tow, Mission Housing hosted its first-ever Senior Walking Club, marking an exciting milestone in supporting wellness, connection, and community pride among residents as part of the San Francisco Revival Initiative.  

This inaugural walk welcomed participants from Valencia Gardens, a 260-unit affordable housing apartment complex in San Francisco’s Inner Mission District. 

Despite osculating rain clouds and a few raindrops, the group of seniors who participated bundled up, geared up, and got to cruising the streets along with a group of staff in safety jackets from Mission Housing. By providing a structured, welcoming way to get outdoors together, the club aims to support seniors in staying active, engaged, and connected rather than feeling isolated at home. 

The walking route took participants down Guerrero Street, up Valencia, and through a mix of sunshine and shade as the group explored the neighborhood at a comfortable pace. 

Fitted with a San Francisco Revival gear bag, each walker was prepared with first aid kits, pedometers, and water for the gentle ½-mile route.  

Mission Neighborhood Health Centers joined Mission Housing and its residents to provide blood pressure checks before the walk, giving seniors the chance to learn about and track their health in real time. 

This Walking Club represents the first step, literally and figuratively, toward more consistent wellness programming across Mission Housing’s sites.  

The vision is to replicate this experience with seniors from each Mission Housing community, expanding participation gradually while continuing to prioritize care, accessibility, and joy.
