SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Mission Housing Development Corporation proudly announces that Deputy Executive Director Marcia Contreras has been named one of the recipients of the prestigious Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business award by the San Francisco Business Times.
The annual honor recognizes the Bay Area’s most powerful, visionary, and influential women leaders who are driving innovation, strengthening communities, and redefining leadership across industries. Contreras was selected for her exceptional accomplishments in affordable housing development, community revitalization, and organizational leadership, as well as her longstanding commitment to expanding opportunities for low-income families throughout San Francisco.
As Deputy Executive Director, Marcia Contreras leads the major operational, development, and community initiatives that position Mission Housing as one of the region’s leading affordable housing organizations. Her leadership spans housing development, asset management, operations, resident services, strategic partnerships, and organizational growth.
For nearly 17 years, Contreras has helped shape the future of affordable housing in the Bay Area through strategic leadership, expertise in complex real estate development, operational excellence, and resident-centered community development. Throughout her tenure at Mission Housing Development Corporation, she has played a critical role in brokering, securing, and advancing transformative affordable housing developments; rehabilitating existing communities; expanding resident services; fundraising through the Cultivation Network; and strengthening partnerships that directly impact thousands of San Francisco residents.
“Strong communities are built through bold, affordable housing efforts — and the teams that bring them to life,” Contreras said. “Affordable housing should be a platform for opportunity, not just a place to live. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to building strong mission-driven teams, advancing innovative housing developments, and ensuring residents have access to the services and support they need to thrive.”
Widely respected throughout the affordable housing and real estate sectors, Contreras has built a reputation as a highly skilled housing developer and business leader capable of navigating the complex intersection of real estate, finance, operations, public-private partnerships, and community development.
Before becoming Deputy Executive Director in 2018, Contreras served in multiple leadership roles within Mission Housing, including Director of Operations, Director of Resident Programs and Services, and Asset Manager. Across those positions, she developed extensive expertise in affordable housing finance, resident services integration, regulatory compliance, property operations, organizational management, and community engagement.
Her leadership philosophy centers on the belief that housing development must extend beyond physical buildings to create pathways for stability, equity, and economic mobility.
“At Mission Housing, we work to ensure every development goes beyond bricks and mortar,” Contreras said. “When strong teams and thoughtful development strategies come together, we can create more than housing; we can build communities where people truly thrive.”
“To put it bluntly, Mission Housing wouldn’t be where it is today without Marcia Contreras. Marcia is a force in affordable housing development and community impact,” said Mission Housing’s Executive Director Sam Moss. “Her business acumen, strategic vision, and deep commitment to residents have helped transform neighborhoods and create lasting opportunities for thousands of families throughout San Francisco. This recognition is a testament to her extraordinary leadership and the impact she continues to make across the Bay Area.”
The Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business awards celebrate women leaders who are shaping industries, championing mentorship, driving innovation, and creating meaningful change throughout the region. Honorees will be recognized at a special celebration hosted by the San Francisco Business Times.
